Whether summer brings us heat, fog or anything in between, we can enjoy the opportunities to experience the art on view in San Mateo County this month.
All natural
A collection of oil paintings by Marianne Schovsbo is presented through August 29 in the exhibition Abstract Water and Trees in the Community Gallery at 400 County Center at the Hall of Justice in Redwood City.
The artist, who lives in Half Moon Bay, is inspired by beautiful landscapes throughout the world. Her works are done in linseed and walnut-based oils, on canvases both large and small.

Photography and sculpture
Two exhibitions are currently featured at San Mateo Public Library.
In the first floor art gallery is a show of photography by Ezra Moussa. His love of the art started while he was in high school, when he began to focus on capturing street views. He is now a computer science student at UC Santa Cruz.
In 2016 Moussa traveled to Cuba, where he turned his camera on the people, culture and life of the city.
The exhibition of Moussa’s work is presented through August 30.
A second exhibit features sculpture by Janet Avedissian. It’s presented in the library’s second floor display case.
She studied ceramics at Glendale College, College of Marin and College of San Mateo. The show of her work is on view through August 28.

Iconic
Work by Jin Kim and Anne Lamborn is featured in Icons and Abstractions, an exhibit on view through August 17 at Gallery House.
Painter Kim is a Korean American artist who often incorporates Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters into her works, seeking to express her thoughts and feelings about family and the world.
Lamborn works primarily in woven art textile. She uses the dyed-painted warp technique. In this show she has created works with dyed cotton string. Her focus in the exhibit is on abstraction of simple forms and fantasy icons.

Chaos
Paintings by Ginger Slonaker are presented in Chaos Theory, on view through August 9 at Avenue 25 Gallery in San Mateo.
While her art seems playful or whimsical at first glance, there is a complexity of emotions at work, as well, as she explores themes of dysfunction, injustice and human emotional experience.

Collage and watercolor
The Main Gallery is showing Madonna With Birds by Patricia Brandt and Equus by Karen Olsen through September 8. A reception for the artists will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. August 3.
Brandt’s show features collages of Mary, bringing together paper, fabric, gems and embroidery inspired by her three-month study in Italy.
Olsen’s watercolors spring from her lifetime love of horses. The works were inspired by her taking part in the 2018 annual roundup in Iceland.

Birds and horses
The Coastal Arts League is showing Personal Journeys through August 11.
The exhibition brings together a variety of media, from printmaking, photography and painting to sculpture and writing.

Refreshing
The Wine Gallery at 890 Laurel Street in San Carlos is featuring works by Myrna Wacknov, Joyce Barron Leopardo and David Anderson through October.
At Galerie Mistral the featured artists are Kat Bergman, Zdenka Bleile, Rob Lee and Barbara Berk. These works also will be on view through October.

At the Courthouse
The San Mateo County History Museum will present a Free First Friday program on August 2. Admission is free for the entire day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Included are two free programs for the public. At 11 a.m. preschool children will learn about lighthouses, followed by a special program within the Ships of the World Gallery, where the story “The Abandoned Lighthouse” will be presented.
Later in the month, on August 18, the museum will hold Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse from 11 a.m. to 3 pm. The County History Museum is housed within San Mateo County’s historic Courthouse at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City.
As a special activity, a ticketed Victorian Tea will be served in historic Courtroom A. Reenactors will play local Victorian millionaires who will highlight fashions from that era. The fee is $6 for adults and $4 for youngsters. For reservations for the Victorian Tea, call 650-299-0104.

Art festivals
At the end of the month, the Labor Day holiday is the time to enjoy two local art festivals.
The Kings Mountain Art Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. August 31 through September 2. It’s held at 13106 Skyline Boulevard, Woodside. Visitors should park along Skyline Boulevard where free shuttles operate approximately one mile in either direction from the fair.
Visitors can wander among the tall trees and enjoy artist booths set in the forest. Visit www.kingsmountainartfair.org to check out information about the artists, the early breakfast available at the site and more.
The Millbrae Art & Wine Festival will be held August 31-September 1 along Broadway Avenue in Millbrae. Art, food, wine and music make for a lively day. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 650-697-7324.
